Description:
The term swing bed refers to a hospital’s ability to use its beds to provide either acute (regular hospital care) or skilled nursing level care. Swing beds are beds that can be used when patients no longer need acute care but still need skilled nursing care and rehabilitation.
If an illness or injury requires a stay in the hospital for an extended period of time, a person may reach a point in recovery where they no longer need to be hospitalized yet aren’t physically able to care for themselves at home. The swing bed unit, located on the Inpatient Care Unit, offers specialized care for these situations.
Social services and rehabilitation personnel are available as needed. The staff will provide services until the patient is stable or until rehabilitation potential is reached and the patient is ready to go home or to another setting for additional care.
