The Social Security Administration provides information about, completes applications for, and maintains client records for all Social Security benefits. Benefit types are retirement, survivor, and disability for the worker and family members. Social Security also administers the need based Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program for low income people over age 65, disabled adults age 18 to 65, and disabled children under age 18.

Beginning October 2014, local Social Security offices will stop providing benefit verification letters, except in emergency situations. Free benefit verification letters are available online, and can be obtained by registering for a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/my account, or requested through the Social Security national toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).
